Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
So much of our angst and our heartache, so much of our relationship strife and struggle in this world comes from where we place our expectations and our focus. As children of God, our focus should be on eternity. If eternity is our focus, then we need to pull ourselves out of the moment we’re currently living in and fix our eyes on the bigger plan for our lives.
Living in the broken world shifts our focus to the moment. We get wrapped up in the emotions of the moment, the decisions we make in the moment, our needs in the moment. When we’re walking through a difficult trial in our marriage, it can be so difficult to see anything other that what’s happening in front of us. Our conversations shift to what we’re dealing with, our emotions become controlled by the struggle in front of us, our decisions are made around the trial, and our prayers become consumed with our solutions to the problem we’re having. We get stuck living in the moment of what we’re experiencing.

The Bible doesn’t let you live in the moment. It pulls you out of what you’re currently experiencing and sets your eyes on the bigger picture. The Bible doesn’t let you shrink the plan down to the moment you’re walking through. It keeps your eyes fixed on the bigger plan. The Bible shifts our understanding and our perspective of our purpose and the plan for our lives. It gives us a greater insight into things that have come before us, and things that are yet to come, and it grounds us in truth.
If your marriage is struggling, get the Bible open and get your eyes off the moment. The best counseling advice you can get is in those pages—they remind us it’s not all about us, but there is a much bigger battle going on around us than what we can see. They remind us of His beautiful plan for redemption, and they fill us with grace that can cover the emotions of the moment.
When we live in the moment, everything can seem more important than it actually is. Our emotions seem more reliable, our needs are more essential, our thoughts are more important. We were created for something much bigger than this specific moment. We were meant to live our lives connected to the Creator of the universe. Live your life with eternity in view.
