Devotion #101

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

The plans for your life are declared by God. The plan for your spouse and for your marriage are declared by God. As I pause and meditate on those thoughts, I’m overwhelmed at the awesomeness of our God. The God who created the universe, who imagined the stars and planets into existence, is the same God who has planned out my little life. He chose my spouse, and He allowed my marriage. The same God who paints sunsets over oceans and mountains, not only knows who I am, but is so intimate with every detail of my life that He has orchestrated my purpose and arranged my path. That’s incredible.

Who am I to question the perfection of His plan for my life? Yet we do all the time, don’t we? We come up with a better plan, one that would make our lives easier or more comfortable, and we tell it to the Creator of the universe. Then, when He doesn’t do what we want, we get upset and cry out to Him, we shake our fists in anger and turn our backs on Him, claiming He is an unfair God.

What if we just leaned in and trusted His plan?  What if we accepted the One who made the stars and the mountains knows best and we allowed Him to choose the path for our life? What if we allowed Him to work in our spouse in the manner and the timing that He chooses is best, and we remained obedient to His plan for marriage in our lives?

Our Lord declares the plan, and it is settled.  When I sit here and meditate on the beauty and comfort in that reality, I find such peace in knowing He is sovereign over all. I have nothing to fear because He has a plan, and He promises it is for my good. I know as I get up and move into my day, the world and my flesh will begin to take over, tearing down that understanding, replacing it with my own plans to overcome the anxiety or struggle of the moment. But I also know each day, as I sit and meditate on these truths in His Word, it reaches deeper and deeper into my heart, and I am able to stand stronger and strong against the world. Choose to meditate on His Word and His promises, and allow those truths to strengthen your marriage today.
